Therapy & Counseling in Oak Brook & Lake Forest, IL

Evidence-based therapy for children, teens, and adults delivered by trained clinicians across three Chicagoland locations. We are currently accepting new therapy clients.

Individual Therapy Rooted in Evidence

At Piece by Piece, therapy is not one-size-fits-all. Our clinicians use empirically supported treatment approaches selected around each client’s specific concerns, goals, and life stage. Every therapeutic relationship begins with understanding you first.

We work with patients across the full lifespan, from early childhood through adulthood, both individually and as family systems. Sessions are available in person at our Chicago, Oak Brook, and Lake Forest offices, as well as via telehealth for eligible clients.

Evidence-Based Therapy Approaches We Use

Our therapists are trained in a range of evidence-based methods. The approach used in your care depends on your presenting concerns and treatment goals.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) A structured, skills-focused approach that addresses the connections between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. CBT is effective for anxiety, depression, OCD, and a wide range of other concerns. It is one of the most researched therapy modalities available.

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) A specialized form of CBT designed specifically for OCD and related anxiety disorders. ERP helps clients gradually face feared situations while resisting compulsive responses, reducing the power those triggers hold over time.

Person-Centered Therapy A client-directed approach that prioritizes empathy, unconditional positive regard, and the therapeutic relationship itself as the vehicle for growth. Well-suited for clients working through identity, self-worth, or life transitions.

Family Systems Therapy Addresses communication patterns and relational dynamics within the family unit. Particularly helpful when a child or teen’s presenting concerns are embedded in family context or when parents and caregivers are a central part of the treatment plan.

Parent Training Structured guidance for parents of children with behavioral, emotional, or developmental challenges. Focuses on practical skill-building, consistency, and strategies that work at home. Parent training is often paired with a child’s individual therapy.

What We Help With

We provide therapy for a wide range of concerns across childhood, adolescence, and adulthood.

  • Anxiety and excessive worry
  • Depression and low mood
  • OCD and related disorders
  • Behavioral challenges in children and adolescents
  • School stress and academic concerns
  • Social difficulties and peer relationship struggles
  • Family conflict and communication problems
  • Life transitions and adjustment difficulties
  • Trauma and stress-related concerns
  • Emotional dysregulation

If your child recently completed a neuropsychological evaluation or psychological assessment with us, therapy can be a natural continuation of that care plan.

Who We Work With

Piece by Piece provides therapy services from early childhood through adulthood. We see:

  • Young children (ages 2 and up at Oak Brook; ages 6 and up at Chicago)
  • School-age children navigating behavioral or emotional challenges
  • Adolescents dealing with anxiety, depression, social difficulties, or school stress
  • Adults managing mood concerns, life transitions, or long-standing challenges
  • Families working through conflict, communication, or parenting difficulties

Our clinicians work with individual clients and with families as a unit, offering a coordinated approach when multiple family members are involved in treatment.

What to Expect in Sessions

Therapy sessions are typically 45 to 50 minutes. Sessions are scheduled weekly or biweekly based on your clinical needs and schedule. The frequency and duration of therapy are determined collaboratively with your clinician and revisited regularly as your goals evolve.

Your first appointment focuses on getting to know you. Your clinician will gather background information, understand your goals, and begin building a treatment approach with you rather than for you.

In Person and Telehealth Options

Therapy is available in person at our three Chicagoland locations and via telehealth for eligible clients. Whether you prefer the structure of in-person sessions or the flexibility of meeting from home, we can accommodate your preference.

Our locations:

  • Oak Brook: 2021 Midwest Road, Suite 104 — Ages 2 and up

Coordinated Care When You Need It

If you or your child have completed testing with us, our therapy team can work directly from those findings to build a treatment plan grounded in real data. We also collaborate with schools, physicians, and other providers when coordination supports your care. Learn how our care coordination works.

For children and teens who struggle with planning, organization, or task management alongside emotional concerns, executive functioning coaching may complement therapy.
