What Is a Neuropsychological Evaluation?
A neuropsychological evaluation is a comprehensive, one-on-one assessment of how the brain is working across cognitive, emotional, and behavioral domains. It goes beyond a standard psychiatric or medical appointment by measuring specific brain functions in a structured, standardized way.
At Piece by Piece, every evaluation is conducted by a licensed neuropsychologist and designed to answer your specific referral questions, whether that is identifying a learning disability, clarifying an ADHD diagnosis, documenting cognitive decline, or establishing a baseline before a medical procedure.
What Gets Assessed
Depending on your referral question, an evaluation at Piece by Piece may assess any combination of:
- Intellectual functioning and cognitive ability
- Learning and memory (verbal and visual)
- Attention, concentration, and processing speed
- Executive functioning: planning, organization, and cognitive flexibility
- Language and communication skills
- Visual-spatial and visual-motor abilities

How the Neuropsychological Evaluation Process Works
Every evaluation at Piece by Piece follows a clear three-step process. Most testing is completed in a single day.
Step 1: Clinical Interview
We begin by gathering a thorough background, including medical, psychiatric, educational, and family history. Your clinician may also review prior records or consult with a referring provider. This typically lasts about one hour and can be conducted virtually or in person.
Step 2: Neuropsychological Testing
Testing: Standardized cognitive and neuropsychological tests are administered in a structured, one-on-one format. Most patients complete all testing in a single day, with a written report delivered within two weeks.
Step 3: Feedback Appointment
Two to three weeks after testing, your doctor meets with you to review results, discuss your diagnosis if applicable, and walk through specific recommendations. A comprehensive written report is provided and can be faxed to any referring provider. This session is typically conducted virtually.
Insurance and Cost
Most major insurance plans cover a significant portion of neuropsychological testing. Piece by Piece is in-network with Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO, Medicare, Optum, United Healthcare, and Kane County and Silver Cross plans. HSA payments and self-pay options are also accepted.
Before any services begin, our team verifies your insurance benefits so you have a clear picture of your estimated out-of-pocket costs. Sliding scale and pro-bono options are available for patients who need financial assistance.
After Your Neuropsychological Evaluation
The evaluation is just the beginning. Following your results, our team can assist with referrals to appropriate providers, coordination with schools and treatment teams, and follow-up consultations. Re-evaluations are available for patients who have been previously tested and need updated findings.
If your child needs school accommodations, we can work directly with their educational team. See how we support care coordination.
