Executive Functioning Therapeutic Coaching
Build the practical skills needed to manage daily demands at school, work, and home. Our executive functioning therapeutic coaching program is individualized, evidence-informed, and available for children, adolescents, and adults across all three Chicagoland locations.
What Is Executive Functioning Therapeutic Coaching?
Executive functioning refers to the set of cognitive skills that allow us to plan, organize, initiate tasks, manage time, and regulate behavior. When these skills are underdeveloped or impaired, the effects show up everywhere: missed deadlines, academic underperformance, workplace difficulties, chronic disorganization, and persistent stress.
Executive functioning therapeutic coaching at Piece by Piece addresses these challenges through a structured, individualized approach that combines cognitive-behavioral strategies with practical skills training. Unlike general academic tutoring or productivity coaching, our model is delivered by trained clinicians and designed to address both the skill gaps and the emotional patterns, such as avoidance, negative self-talk, and performance anxiety, that reinforce them.
Who This Service Is For
- Executive functioning coaching is appropriate for a wide range of ages and situations. Common referrals include:
- Students struggling with academic organization, task initiation, or follow-through
- Children and teens with ADHD, learning disabilities, or documented executive functioning weaknesses
- Young adults transitioning to college or entering the workforce
- Professionals managing productivity challenges, missed deadlines, or difficulty handling competing demands
- Adults with ADHD who want structured, skills-based support alongside or following a formal evaluation
If you or your child recently completed a neuropsychological evaluation or psychological assessment with us, executive functioning coaching can be a direct extension of those findings and recommendations.
What We Work On
Sessions are built around the specific goals and challenges of each client. Areas commonly addressed include:
- Planning, prioritization, and goal setting
- Time management and task initiation
- Organization of materials, workflows, and digital systems
- Managing procrastination, avoidance, and performance-related stress
- Study strategies and academic accountability for students
- Workplace habits including meeting preparation, follow-up, and communication
- Developing personalized systems for tracking responsibilities and deadlines
How It Works
Coaching is delivered in individual 1:1 sessions, in person at our Chicagoland locations or virtually. Sessions are typically scheduled weekly or biweekly depending on the client’s goals and pace.
Short-term engagements typically run 12 to 20 sessions. Longer-term support is available for clients who benefit from ongoing accountability. For younger clients, parent consultation is included to support consistency between sessions. Adults may also access optional workplace-focused sessions.
Each engagement begins with an initial consultation to identify specific goals, understand the context of the challenges, and build a personalized plan.
The Therapeutic Difference
Most productivity and academic coaching programs focus exclusively on skill acquisition. Our approach goes further by addressing the emotional and behavioral patterns that undermine skill use. A client may know how to make a to-do list but still not use one due to anxiety, avoidance, or low frustration tolerance.
By integrating cognitive-behavioral techniques into each session, our clinicians help clients identify and work through these underlying patterns, not just add new tools that go unused.
