What an Autism Assessment Includes

An autism assessment at Piece by Piece typically includes:

  • Clinical interview: Detailed history gathered from the individual and, when appropriate, from parents or caregivers, covering developmental, behavioral, social, and communication history.
  • Standardized autism-specific measures: Structured observation and interview tools designed to assess the presence and severity of autism-related features.
  • Cognitive and adaptive testing: Assessment of intellectual functioning, language, and daily living skills to provide a complete picture of the individual’s strengths and needs.
  • Rating forms and questionnaires: Completed by parents, caregivers, teachers, or the individual to capture behavior across settings.
Observation using gold-standard instruments: Including structured tools such as the ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule), used to observe social communication and behavior in a standardized way.

Who Should Consider an Autism Assessment

An autism assessment may be appropriate for:

  • Children with delayed or atypical language development
  • Individuals with significant social difficulties or challenges with peer relationships
  • Those with restricted interests, repetitive behaviors, or sensory sensitivities
  • Adults who were not evaluated in childhood but suspect they may be autistic
  • Individuals seeking diagnostic clarity to access services, supports, or accommodations

After the Autism Assessment: Next Steps

Following the assessment, a comprehensive written report is provided that includes diagnostic conclusions and specific recommendations for treatment, school supports, and community resources. A feedback session is held with the individual and family to review findings and answer questions. Our team can also coordinate directly with schools, pediatricians, and other providers to help implement recommendations. If your child needs support through an IEP or 504 plan, we can assist with that process. Learn more about care coordination.
